Workshop no. 23: Block Party: Block Printing With Carla Weeks

As part of this year’s DesignPhiladelphia festival, we invited artist Carla Weeks to the store for an exclusive workshop on the art of block printing on furoshiki.

Our event began with a public presentation that touched on Carla’s inspirations, the history of block printing, a summary of the primary forms, and a quick overview of the uses of furoshiki. Afterward, our students each got the chance to try their hand at block printing. After utilizing Carla’s collection of inspirational imagery, students concepted and sketched their ideas before testing the act of block printing on scrap muslin. Once they were comfortable, they transferred their design to their furoshiki.
