Rikumo Cinema: Spirited Away

 When people ask us what first sparked our fascination with Japan, most of us point to Hayao Miyazaki. The visionary director (and Japanese national treasure) has been pouring his artistry, whimsy,  and wisdom into animated films since 1985. With legions of fans and an Academy Award under its wing, Spirited Away is no exception. The film follows the adventures of Chihiro, a 10-year-old girl whose parents fall under an eerie spell after finding a mysterious abandoned village. To save them, she must infiltrate a colorful world ruled by gods, witches, and spirits. Even as Studio Ghibli continues to produce animated masterpieces, Spirited Away has remained our personal favorite for its message of hope, bravery, and love.  

It felt fitting, then, to celebrate our fist store anniversary with a special screening at the Rikumo concept store. With popcorn in tow, we settled into our seats to watch Chihiro face witches, fly dragons, and befriend all kinds of spirits. It was nothing short of a magical night.
