Workshop no. 30: Learning From a Master: A Kirié Paper Art Workshop with Shu Kubo

Kirié master Shu Kubo explains how workshop participants can use templates to create their own designs.

On Saturday, November 12, 2022, enthusiasts of Japanese culture and crafting gathered at the Rikumo concept store in Ardmore for its first-ever kirié workshop – hosted by acclaimed paper-cutting artist Shu Kubo.

Since opening his first exhibition to critical acclaim in 1977, kirié master Shu Kubo has pioneered a wholly original take on the form, one that uses mixed media - including various paints, fabrics, and natural materials - to enhance the impact of his work. Over the years, Kubo-sensei has brought kirié to every corner of the globe through international displays and workshops like the one hosted at Rikumo.

Tools in hand, Kubo-sensei led both in-person and online attendees through the fundamentals of the traditional Japanese art form. The class quickly found that, with a little patience, they too were capable of carving intricate designs out of the paper before them. For this session, the result of their efforts was a hand-cut multilayered greeting card – just in time for the holiday season.

We’re honored to have had the chance to learn kirié from Kubo-sensei himself, and we eagerly await his next visit to the store. Take a look at some photos from the event below, and remember to sign up for our newsletter to stay in-the-know about future Rikumo workshops!
