Learning the Basics on How to Create Your Own Bonsai with Kifu Bonsai
A matured bonsai tree from Kifu Bonsai at rikumo.
On Sunday, June 25, participants had the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of bonsai while shaping their own miniature tree under expert guidance. Guests gathered at the rikumo Concept Store for a hands-on introduction to the art of bonsai, led by acclaimed bonsai artist Bob Mahler of Kifu Bonsai. Rooted in centuries of Japanese tradition, bonsai blends horticulture, aesthetics, and mindful practice—and this workshop offered participants an inviting entry point into a craft often perceived as intimidating.
With more than 30 years of experience and training under Japanese bonsai masters, Mahler guided attendees step by step through the process of creating their own carefully potted sapling. Each participant was provided with all the essential materials, including a pot, plant material, wire, soil, and pruning scissors, along with detailed care instructions to ensure their bonsai would thrive long after the workshop ended.
Throughout the afternoon, Mahler shared insights into the philosophy behind bonsai, explaining how patience, observation, and long-term care are just as important as technique. As participants shaped and pruned their trees, the room filled with focused energy and thoughtful conversation, punctuated by questions about styling, seasonal maintenance, and the lifelong relationship between caretaker and tree.
As owner of Kifu Bonsai in Greenville, PA, and president of the Pennsylvania Bonsai Society, Mahler brings deep expertise and a generous teaching spirit to his work. In addition to tending his own garden studio, he serves as a consultant for horticultural institutions and oversees the bonsai exhibit at the annual Philadelphia Flower Show: an experience that shone through in every aspect of the class.
We were honored to host Bob Mahler and to welcome so many curious makers and plant enthusiasts into the world of bonsai. Take a look at photos from the workshop below, and be sure to sign up for our newsletter to stay informed about upcoming rikumo workshops and events.
